Sweet Home is a small logging town located on the southeastern edge of central Oregon’s beautiful Willamette Valley, not far from the Oregon Coast. This community of 8,300 is recognized as “The Gateway to the Santium Playground Recreation Area,” which contains Foster and Green Peter Lakes, Clear Lake, the Santiam and Calapooia Rivers and many state and federal parks. The lakes and rivers offer excellent fishing, boating, rafting and swimming, while the parks have many camping, picnicking, hiking, rockhounding and hunting opportunities. The Mount Bachelor ski area is also just a short drive from Sweet Home, and the town is located at the entrance to the beautiful Cascade Mountain Range. Points of interest in the town include the East Linn Museum and the Weddle Covered Bridge, a community restoration project that adjoins Sankey Park. A variety of colorful murals decorate many of the town’s buildings, concentrated along Main and Long Streets, as well as in the Sweet Home High School auditorium. Sweet Home also hosts the Oregon Jamboree, which is the Northwest’s largest country music festival, and a Celtic Festival and Highland Games. Sweet Home is approximately 61 miles from Eugene and 97 miles from Portland.

The McKenzie River Area enjoys a generally mild climate with an average temperature of 53 degrees, mild winters, long growing seasons, and very few drastic weather elements. The area usually experiences sunny, mild summers that continue into October. The majority of rain falls in the winter and early spring months. It rarely snows in the McKenzie River Region, but during winter, snow may occasionally dust the foothills and skiing is available in the mountains at Willamette Pass. Depending on snow conditions, the Pass can be open from Thanksgiving to April. Summertime temperatures are generally in the 80s with cool evenings, although the region can experience a week or so of higher temps in the 90s or even 100s.
