Hood-River is the name of a small community in northern Oregon and the river that runs through it. It's located along Interstate 84 near the Washington State line and within the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. The town of Hood River has a population of approximately 4,500 and has long been known for its' incredibly beautiful setting along the Columbia River Gorge, and in recent years has become the most popular spot for windsurfing in the Northwest, due to the steady wind conditions within the gorge. The town has incredible views of the Columbia River and Mount Hood, and (besides windsurfing) offers fishing, rafting, hiking, camping and skiing and other winter sports. The Hood River area also has many old roads, cross-country ski trails and other scenic terrain that attracts mountain bikers, while the rivers, waterfalls, forests and mountains draw hikers of all different skill levels. In addition, the Historic Columbia River Highway, which is sections of the old highway that was abandoned in the 1950s, has been restored and turned into trails for hikers and bikers. Hood River County is the leading producer of apples and pears in the country, so, not surprisingly, farm and garden tours are another major attraction for the area. Hood River has hosted an annual springtime Blossom Festival for over 50 years, and a Harvest Festival is held in the fall.

Hood River Weather & Climate

Northwest Oregon, near Portland, enjoys a mild climate with only occasional severe weather elements such as tornadoes, hailstorms, or high winds. The single most important factor in the climate is the Pacific Ocean. Due to the normal movement of air masses from west to east, most of the systems moving across Oregon have been modified extensively after traveling over the Pacific Ocean. As a result, winter temperatures and summer maximum temperatures are greatly moderated. However, the northwestern corner of the state does receive abundant rainfall. Near the coast, the average annual snowfall is only one to three inches, with many years in which there is no measurable amount at all. Hailstorms occur each year, but are generally light and cover small areas. The north coastal area has the least amount of sunshine each year, while the southeast corner of the state has the most.
