La-Pine is a small community located in one of the richest recreational regions of central Oregon - the Deschutes National Forest. Situated south of Bend, between the towns of Sunriver and Gilchrist, the town sits in the heart of this spectacular region along the banks of the Deschutes River and within the National Forest. The Forest contains five wilderness areas, six designated Wild and Scenic Rivers, as well as the Oregon Cascades Recreation Area, the Newberry National Volcanic Monument and the Metolius Conservation Area. Abundant fishing, white water rafting and other water sports are found here, as well as miles and miles of hiking and snowmobile trails. Nearby Mt. Bachelor provides downhill and cross country skiing, sledding and snowboarding, and the Newberry Crater has more than 100 miles of snowmobile trails and play areas for snow enthusiasts. The Newberry National Volcanic Monument contains 50,000 acres of lakes, obsidian fields, lava formations and waterfalls. Naturalists lead walks in the summertime, and campfire programs are offered at a small outdoor amphitheater. However, the main attraction at Newberry is Paulina's Peak at 7,985 feet, which can be reached by a narrow, unpaved road. It's slow going, but well worth the effort to reach it.

La Pine Weather & Climate

Central Oregon enjoys 300 days of sunshine per year with low humidity levels and an arid climate. Any variation in the weather depends on elevation and proximity to the mountains. Central Oregon temperatures are basically warm in the summer and cold in the winter, but temperatures drop in the evenings year round due to the high elevation of the region. The Cascade Mountains keeps most of the precipitation over the valleys and on the coast, so Central Oregon receives very little rain. Occasional showers occur during spring and summer, and occasional sleet, hail or snow is possible in the winter. Snow usually falls during the evening and melts off during the day, and averages around 8 inches in January.
